Jen's Tuesday Run & Realization 1.12.10

One would think that after June when I ended up at the Orthopedic Specialist with tendonitis I'd have learned to listen to my body. So, I'm a little stubborn. I should have listened on Saturday...I should have slowed down, walked or stopped when the pain in my knee wouldn't go away. I promise, I'm going to listen this time.

After ice and rest on Sunday and Monday I ventured to the gym last night. I decided to give the track a try, it's small...16 laps = 1 mile. The knee started off fine, around lap 13 the pain was back. I finished the mile and stretched. Thought I'd give the treadmill a try, made it a 1/2 a mile and couldn't run any more. I felt defeated and frustrated that my body wouldn't let me do what I wanted it to do. I jumped on the bike, it didn't bother my knee, it got my heart rate up and I got to watch a re-run of Grey's Anatomy from the 1st season.

For the next 30 minutes I kept thinking about this challenge - I'm going to be behind...behind my weekly goal, unable to keep up with Zoe, what does this mean? Well, I am not giving up, I will be behind and I'm okay with that. I am going to spend the rest of January going slow, walking on the treadmill, slowly increasing my mileage and speed - swimming laps after work - learning to love the bike. I need to be smart now because I want to cross the finish line on September 5th with Zoe having just completed our first 1/2 Marathon! I'll keep you all posted of my progress and am looking forward to the day when I can say it was an easy 3 miles, 5 miles etc. Keep your fingers crossed it's soon!

  1. Don't you give up girl. I hope that you get back on track soon. Maybe some glucosamine will help with you knee (I don't know details about your injury). My knee used to click like a bad old bicycle or car and now it's so much better.
